Yes. Unlike washing your clothes in water, dry cleaning does not cause the fabric to fade. Frequent dry cleaning actually extends the life of a garment.
Home dry cleaning kits like Dryel can be an effective way to stretch your dry cleaning dollar. By “freshening” your clothes between visits, they reduce the frequency of going to the cleaner. However, as the instructions for Dryel explain, these products are designed to complement professional dry cleaning, not a replace it. Home dry cleaning kits don’t remove your sweat residue or the natural body oils that build up on your clothes. They also fail to remove other substances such as ground in soil, ketchup, lipstick, makeup, ink, lint, vegetable oil, butter, shoe polish and pet hair.
Under normal conditions, dry cleaning should not shrink your clothes. In fact, your clothes are much more likely to shrink if they are washed in water. The process is called ”dry” cleaning” because dry cleaners use a chemical solvent, rather than water, to clean fabric. The cleansing process takes place in a machine that both washes and dries your clothes. These machines are specifically designed to prevent fabric shrinkage.
Unfortunately some stains are permanent. Once stains have become part of the fabric, continued attempts to remove them will cause dye loss or fabric damage known as chafing or fraying.
Over the past 20 years there has been a lot of negative publicity about the dangers to humans of the dry cleaning solvent, perchloroethylene (perc). According to the American Council on Science and Health (link to ACSH) (ACSH), much of the hype is scientifically unfounded.
