Green Practices at 1-800-DryClean

Can a dry cleaner every truly be “green”? We receive that question quite a bit, and we’re happy to provide you with a thorough explanation of our commitment to the environment.

Responsible Waste Handling and Disposal

Regardless of which industry cleaning process used to remove the dirt and grime from dirty clothes, dry cleaners create environmentally undesirable waste. A good cleaner will dispose of their waste in responsible way. 1-800-DryClean will only do business with dry cleaning plants that handle and dispose of their cleaning solutions responsibly and in accordance with government regulations. We take great care in researching our partners prior to doing business with them. In addition to proper waste disposal, dry cleaners can eliminate total waste by using new fourth- and fifth-generation dry cleaning machines that preserve more than 96% of the solvent they use. This equipment is designed to keep solvent inside the machine, out of the air and ground water.

Recycling

At participating locations, our customers have the option of choosing a reusable “Think Green Converta Bag” for their dry cleaning pick up and delivery, rather than standard plastic bags. The Converta Bag is a versatile laundry bag that converts into a garment bag for delivery. Converta Bags have a zipper and side strap for easy carrying, and are ideal for smaller orders of five or fewer garments. Please contact your local franchise to request a Think Green Converta Bag instead of your Bright Blue Bag.

Bags are not the only means of recycling. At 1-800-DryClean we reuse any hangers that are still in good condition and send the rest to your city’s recycling program, along with all the other recyclable waste generated by our operations. To ensure the protection of your clothing please be sure to place your recyclable hangers in a separate bag for driver pickup.

Reducing OUR Carbon Footprint

We take many additional steps to reduce our carbon footprint including:

  • Switching to fluorescent bulbs
  • Insulating pipes
  • Replacing antiquated machinery with new energy efficient models that reduce CO2 emissions.

However, the biggest way we reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions is by providing pick-up and delivery service. Every order of clothing that we deliver is one less round trip you make to a dry cleaner. Since the typical van services more than 300 homes a day, 6 days a week, 50 weeks a year, we eliminate thousands energy consuming trips. So, by carpooling your dry cleaning you reduce your own carbon footprint!
